Optimality condition for the Petz map
Physical Review Letters (2025)
In quantum error correction, the Petz map is a method that can perfectly fix errors when certain ideal conditions are met. Even though perfect recovery isn’t usually possible, the Petz map still does a very good job in most cases.
In this paper, scientists identify exactly when the Petz map is the best possible choice by linking it to a specific measure of how well quantum information is preserved. In some cases, it’s easy to tell when the Petz map won’t be optimal by checking a simple mathematical rule.
