Millimeter-wave superconducting qubit
PRX Quantum (2025)
In this paper, scientists show how to control individual photons at much higher frequencies than before — around 72 GHz — using a specially designed superconducting qubit. Operating in this millimeter-wave range makes the system less sensitive to heat, so it can run at higher temperatures without needing rare and expensive helium isotopes for cooling. This breakthrough could simplify quantum hardware, improve sensing and detection, and open a new, largely unexplored part of the electromagnetic spectrum for quantum technologies.
